Aleister Crowley composed and first performed The Rites of Eleusis with his associates in London in 1910 e.v. to publicize his magical fraternity, the A∴A∴. Loosely based on the ancient Greek initiation ceremonies, the Eleusinian Mysteries, the Rites form a cycle that invokes planetary energies by means of dramatic ritual involving music, poetry, dance, and stimulation of all the senses. The audience is more a part of the Rite than they are mere observers.
The Rites of Eleusis were published as a special supplement in The Equinox Vol. I No. VI. and have been performed by numerous O.T.O. groups worldwide. Heart of Blood has produced stage performances of the Rites in co-operation with numerous O.T.O. bodies in the United States since 2014 e.v.
