The Rite of Luna

The Rite of Luna is the seventh and final Rite in the series The Rites of Eleusis. Loosely based on the ancient Greek initiation ceremonies, the Eleusinian Mysteries, The Rites of Eleusis were composed and first performed by Aleister Crowley and his associates in London in 1910 e.v. to publicize his magical fraternity, the A∴A∴

The Rite of Luna was originally performed as the Rite of Artemis before the rest of the series and celebrates the Divine Huntress and Lady of the Moon, Diana of the Ephesians, attended by Cancer, the Warden of the Grail, and Taurus, Lord of the Bow.  She is invoked by Pan, All-Devourer, All-Begetter, in a Witches Sabbath, and her Arrow pierces the Rainbow produced as a result of alchemical putrefaction arising from the Orphic Egg.

The Rites of Eleusis have been performed worldwide by numerous O.T.O. members and groups. They form a cycle that invokes the planetary energies of the gods Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sol, Mercury, and Luna by means of dramatic ritual. The audience is more a part of the Rite than they are mere observers.

Crowley wrote of these rituals, “the object of them is […] the invocation of a God, that God conceived in a more or less material and personal fashion.”
